I read with interest and more than a little cynicism this article from the Associated Press, Candidates on the issues: Space. The first thing to pay attention to is how a candidate qualifies his remarks. It's easy to say something is a good idea, but to voice a commitment is less common.Sens. Kerry and Edwards and Rep. Kucinich qualified their words with the typical "if it's affordable." The implication here is that space exploration is all well and good as a desire, but when faced with deficits, needs "here on Earth", etc., that it must take a back seat to everything else. This is the same tired argument that has been around since the dawn of the space age. What makes it worse is that it's one side of a catch-22 in reasoning in which space can't win.
