  Labor Department Announces $15 Million Grant To Help Laid-Off Shuttle Workers  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version 

During a visit to the John F. Kennedy Space Center today, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced a grant of $15 million to assist approximately 3,200 workers who will be impacted by the impending retirement of NASA's Space Shuttle Program. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - During a visit to the John F. Kennedy Space Center today, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis and FL. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas (D - New Smyrna Beach) announced a grant of $15 million to assist approximately 3,200 workers who will be impacted by the impending retirement of NASA's Space Shuttle Program. The grant will impact workers from major aerospace contractors, including ASRC Aerospace Corp., Boeing and United Space Alliance.

The SpaceX team kicked off 2010 with the successful full duration orbit insertion firing of the Falcon 9 second stage at our Texas test site (details below). This was the final stage firing required for launch, so the second stage will soon be packaged for shipment and should arrive at Cape Canaveral by end of month. Depending on how well full vehicle integration goes, launch should occur one to three months later.

United Launch Alliance's launch complex 41 KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - Today, a conduit financing package was approved by the Space Florida Board of Directors to reassign the lease for Launch Complex 41 (LC-41) to United Launch Alliance. Florida Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp signed the resolution during today's meeting of the Space Florida Board that ensures no aerospace jobs at United Launch Alliance will be lost when the shuttle stops flying in 2010.

  45th Space Wing to Break Ground for New Spacecraft Facilities  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version 

USAF 45th Space Wing Emblem CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. -- The 45th Space Wing will cut the ribbon for a new satellite facility and break ground for a future spacecraft facility during a combined ceremony Thursday, May 28. Air Force officials and distinguished visitors will cut the ribbon for the newly constructed Satellite Spacecraft Alert Facility (SAF) in Area 59. The facility will protect small- to medium-sized satellites during severe weather, including hurricanes.

  United Launch Alliance First RS-68A Hot-Fire Engine Test a Success  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version 

Denver, CO - United Launch Alliance today announced the successful first hot-firing of the new Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne RS-68A engine that will be used to power a future upgraded version of the Delta IV Heavy Lift launch vehicle. The hot-fire test was conducted 3:16 p.m. CDT, at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center, Miss., today. Stennis is the home of America’s largest rocket engine test facility. Stennis Space Center is the same facility that is utilized in development and testing of the space shuttle main engines.

Space Launch Complex 36 A landmark announcement by the U.S. Air Force and the state of Florida today will fundamentally expand the state's position and prominence in aerospace and the space industry in all three key sectors: civil, military and commercial, broadening participation in space-related activities. Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, subject to completion of the environmental impact analysis process, will be re-built as a multi-use vertical launch complex capable of supporting several launch vehicle configurations ranging from light to medium-lift into low-Earth orbit and beyond.

Falcon 9 First 9-engine cluster test firing. Credit: SpaceX MCGREGOR TX - Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) conducted the first nine engine firing of its Falcon 9 launch vehicle at its Texas Test Facility outside McGregor on July 30th. A second firing on August 1st completed a major NASA Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) milestone almost two months early.
