Thirty-three years ago, on July 15, 1975, the United States and Soviet Union set aside their Cold War differences and came together in history-making cooperation in space - the first international space mission. Two decades before the International Space Station made international cooperation in space commonplace, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project captured the hopes of a world longing for peace between global superpowers and foreshadowed future partnerships. The docking of an American Apollo spacecraft and Soviet Soyuz marked a high point of detente at the peak of the Cold War. Visit our special ASTP section below with image galleries, documents, transcripts and other detailed background. Click SP-4209 to read NASA's historical account of the mission.
