Ares I-X Flew "Rock Steady" Despite Parachute Failure  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - NASA's Ares I-X prototype rocket was damaged when two of its three recovery parachutes failed and it landed in the Atlantic Ocean much harder than expected, but that appears to be the only anomaly of the six-minute flight designed to simulate the first stage portion of ascent of the Ares I crew launch vehicle in development as a replacement for the space shuttle.

Ares I-X Launch: A New Era Begins  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - Four years after development began, NASA's Constellation program took flight today with the successful launch of the Ares I-X test vehicle. The six-minute flight, designed primarily to gather aerodynamic data on the vehicle performance in actual flight for comparison with computer models, comes at a time of uncertainty for the space agency's initiative to return astronauts to the Moon and eventually land on Mars. A presidential panel recommended vast changes to the program which may result in the cancellation of the Ares I crew launch vehicle.

NASA Moves Ares I-X Rocket To Launch Pad For Crucial Test Flight  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

NASA's Ares I-X test rocket rolls out of the Vehiucle Assembly Building overnight October 20 KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL - NASA rolled the towering Ares I-X rocket to the launch pad this morning amidst a cloud of uncertainty over the future of the launch vehicle Ares I-X is designed to simulate. While the future of NASA's replacement for the space shuttle fleet, the Ares I crew launch vehicle, is in doubt, the agency is pressing ahead with preparations to launch the first test vehicle next week, saying the knowledge gained from the flight will be worth it even if NASA drops the Ares I project as recommended by a presidential review committee in its report released this week.
