CAPE CANAVERAL, AFS - The familiar roar of a rocket's powerful engines inaugurated a new era of commercial space transportation today at Cape Canaveral. The maiden flight of the 157-foot tall Falcon 9 rocket, built by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), successfully placed a demonstration space station resupply spcaecraft into a 155 mile high low Earth orbit nine and a half minutes after launch. more importantly, today's flight brought an added measure of credibility for an upstart company that hopes to be a prime supplier for NASA's future space transportation requirements.

Credit: Chris Thompson / SpaceX CAPE CANAVERAL, AFS - All eyes will be on Cape Canaveral tomorrow for the first launch of a rocket that could herald a new era for the commercial space industry and NASA. If Florida's fickle weather co-operates, sometime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. EDT, the inaugural flight of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation's Falcon 9 rocket will take to the skies, carrying with it the hopes and ambitions of a gutsy upstart space company and the commercial space movement as a whole.

SpaceX Hopes For June Debut Of New Falcon 9 Rocket  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket test firing CAPE CANAVERAL, FL - Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) is targeting an earliest possible launch date of June 4 for the maiden flight of the company's Falcon 9 launch vehicle. Lingering issues with processing all of the paperwork necessary in order for the U.S. Air Force, which runs the Eastern Range at Cape Canaveral, to give final approval for launch have repeatedly pushed back the launch date.

"Due to delays in the recent GPS satellite launch, Air Force range safety officials unfortunately did not have the resources to process our final documentation," said a SpaceX representative in an email update today. "SpaceX is now looking at no earlier than Friday, June 4th for its first test launch attempt. Will let you know the confirmed date and time as soon as we know."

Telemetry Glitch Scrubs Launch Of Next Generation GPS Spacecraft  Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Delta IV launch scrub MAY 23 UPDATE: Sunday's launch attempt of the Delta IV rocket with the next-generation Global Positioning System satellite GPS IIF SV-1 has been scrubbed again. Launch has been rescheduled for Monday night. According to a USAF press release:

"Mission managers require additional time to validate the modified approach to monitor the Global Positioning System satellite telemetry signal... The next launch attempt has been set for Monday, May 24, with a launch window of 11:13-11:31 p.m. EDT. The weather forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of acceptable weather during the launch window."

CAPE CANAVERAL, AFS - The Air Force will have to wait another couple days to send the first of a new family of Global Positioning System Satellites into orbit. Last night's launch attempt was called off with just minutes left in the countdown when a communication issue between the spacecraft and ground equipment couldn't be resolved in time to beat the close of the 18-minute launch window.
