Total initial structure is the total structure cost of the stages of the spacecraft up to and including the current stage. For multistage spacecraft, the initial structure of the first stage is the largest component of the total initial structure. Initial structure price ranges from a thousand dollars for a low performance pressure fed seven kilogram model to six hundred million for a multistage high performance pumped Saturn V class spacecraft.

Total initial structure is calculated at each stage after the first using the initial structure cost. This is in turn used to calculate the total initial cost.

total initial structure ( third stage ) = total initial structure ( second stage ) + initial structure ( third stage )

total initial cost = total initial labor + total initial structure
