THE MODERN TITAN PROGRAM BACKGROUND

While the Titan rocket program did not face total elimination following the introduction of the Space Shuttle, the Challenger explosion dramatically altered the future of the vehicle.

With a decision by the U.S. Air Force to abandon the Space Shuttle as a means of delivering their satellites, an immediate need was created for a reliable, long-term heavy-lift military rocket.

In addition, Martin Marietta stood ready to adapt their huge rocket to carry large, heavy commercial satellites and vigorously enter an uncharted marketplace which was created following the Challenger tragedy.

Two distinct versions of the Titan rocket soon emerged. These were the Commercial Titan III and the Titan IV.
